This picture was taken under a bridge on a hiking trail that has become my favorite. I can let Jersey run free without worrying about him. He sometimes runs a few feet ahead looking back to check on me. But mostly he walks right by my side. If I stop to take a picture he stands there with me watching whatever has caught my eye. He is by far my most loyal friend and companion.

Our year has started off with the worst ice storm in our city’s history. We have no power and no water. I am writing this from Chris’ shop which has all the power in the world but no shower or bed. So sleeping here is out of the question but at least there is the Internet. I am posting some pictures to Flickr from yesterday. Things look much worse today but didn’t have time or the energy to take any pictures. We woke up this morning to discover that a large limb had fallen on the power line from the light pole to the garage and landed on the big green truck. I don’t think there is any damage to the truck but the light pole is now laying on the ground.

I am extremely grateful that we have blankets, the fireplace and each other to keep warm. We have all been huddling together in the living room and also sleeping there as it is the only warm room in the house. Our neighbors are giving us some kerosene and another friend is loaning us a heater. We are very blessed to have these people in our lives. I feel even more blessed that we have a home.

I hope all of you that are reading this are able to stay warm and safe. Love you all!

During the past few weeks I feel as though I have neglected Maddie. Not in the way of food or shelter but in the everyday sit down and play kind of way. We have redirected her a million times a day and by redirect I mean that we have pushed her out of our way. It seems it is the only way to get things done that desperately need to be done. She has been understanding for the most part only because we tell her during the redirection that she will indeed have a donkey when all of this is over. Please God, make sure my little girl gets a donkey!

For the last two days I have stayed at home with Maddie because she has a virus of some sort. I won’t go into details but this virus is hanging on for dear life and shows no signs of subsiding anytime soon. Other than the horribly disgusting symptoms, she has remained her delightful self and has wanted to play every second that we were together. I decided that I owed her that much after weeks of neglect. I am sorry that she is sick but I am also thankful for the time we had this week for the simple things:

Play Dough Faces

Indoor Slide (The smile on her face is worth the $10 garage sale purchase)

Tea Party with her Teddy Bear (I was not invited to this party but she did allow me to take pictures)

What the heck was I thinking? One day I walked out on the front porch and suddenly realized how badly the paint was peeling. I started sweeping the porch, it was a warm spring day and when I had finished there was a pile of paint chips that had flaked off. So I sprung into action by making a list of materials needed to paint the porch.  On the list was a paint scraper. Yes, I decided to that all the old paint had to go. It would not be good enough just to paint over the old. Our porch deserved better and it would receive a complete makeover. Crazy idea. What I didn’t realize is that there were several layers and by several I mean approximately ten and once you start there is no going back. I started and I want to go back and undo what I have done. I cannot feel my fingers, my shoulders and knees are aching but there is no going back. I must finish what I started and since it was my idea I can’t complain that I am the one doing all the work. Chris occasionally comes out of the house to check the progress and he has scraped the majority of the paint from the railing but the porch floor is mine and mine alone. Our porch is the full length of the house and after a six weeks into the project I still have a third of the porch floor to scrape. I see the progress that I have made but I swear when I go out in the morning it seems as though a paint fairy has repainted half the porch and undone all the work I did the night before. And the porch seems to be getting bigger. It could be all the paint fumes entering my nasal cavitiy and a few brain cells have certainly been killed in the past weeks. My goal is to finish the scraping this weekend and get the painting done before the hot humid weather comes and ruins the fresh paint. I thought I would post some pictures to show just how thick the paint is and maybe someone will feel sorry for me, visit my house while I am out and finish the scraping for me. A girl can dream, right?

The top of the photo is obviously the layers upon layers of paint that has accumulated over the years. The bottom of the photo is all the hard work I have done to remove the years of paint. Have you noticed how many times I have used the words hard work? Did I mention it was hard and it was a lot of work? Just checking.

Close-up photo of the the thick layers and the nice clean floor boards after they have been stripped. There will be relief and a strong sense of accomplishment when the porch is finished. I can’t wait to see the end result and I hope that the end with come very, very soon or I may lose the feeling in my fnger tips very soon.

Those of you who know Chris can probably imagine the scene – Chris was trying to teach Maddie to count to ten using UNO cards. He was also trying to teach her the rules of WAR, the classic card game that I played when I was young but not as young as Maddie. Chris was determined and extremely persistent. Maddie is two and was not interested. She was only interested in playing her own game called “I-N-N-O-P”. Don’t ask because I don’t understand it either. While Chris was explaining why his 6 trumped her 2 she was explaining that we should hush up and watch her point to the cards. Pointing to the cards is a strategic move in the competetive game of “I-N-N-O-P”.Â
